Fitted Wardrobes

Unfortunately, I have to face the fact that I havent been a teenager for a while now and the bedroom of a rural housewife might not be such a draw. Still, that doesnt mean it isnt worth thinking about. I could put the camera in a room where the results might appeal to people who spend more time fantasising about country living than teenage girls. The morning-room (which still doubles as our drawing-room), for example. Im usually dressed when Im using it and if this house were open to the public that would be one of the rooms wed invite people to see. From our point of view the advantage of film over public access is that a camera is relatively unobtrusive, being unlikely to make a lot of noise or walk off with the snuffboxes. While a camera would offer website subscribers a true picture, not just of the room, but its use. Me opening my letters, smoking a Nicorette Inhalator. The room empty for several days. The dog wandering in. The room empty again. The children running through it. The room tidied by beautiful housekeeper in very short shorts. Then a climax - the room full of weekend guests saying indiscreet things. On reflection, perhaps the morning-room wouldnt be such a good choice. Or the dining-room. The telly-room is a possibility. It has a huge gothic fireplace, Peruvian mummy wrappings and Indian phallus coverers which give it the warmth and drama of a Hammer House of Horror film set. Furthermore, we spend a good deal of time in it. By evening youd get the children sitting together on one sofa cushion, their laps covered by a dozen smaller cushions, frozen as if in a photograph. By night youd see me shouting at the television or sobbing in front of it. The dog staring very intently at Peter. Peter fast asleep, dressed in a green wool, hooded kaftan. Tin Tin meets the leprechaun St Francis. And by day youd get me again, watching that lovely, lovely Ed Stourton on the 1 oclock news (well, clearly, its vital that Im up to the moment with current events. You never know when you might get the Call). The trouble is that while having a camera in the TV room would certainly give an authentic impression of country living, it could be argued that Internet surfers might confuse it with the website of someone who lives on entirely the wrong kind of estate. The kind with more drug dealers than gamekeepers. It would all be so much easier if I was a teenager. Which reminds me, there is the nanny. I grant you shes in her twenties, but that still makes her . . . months younger than me. Employers use spy cameras on their nannies these days, dont they? Why not just re-transmit the images on the Internet? I suppose she might not care for the idea. And theres probably some law against it. So, its back to my bedroom and my fantasy. There are 100 million people out there who want to see me in my bedsocks. And, if they are very lucky and have a spare 10, they can.
This second-floor balcony off the master bedroom offers a good example of a very desirable feature that happened in a roundabout way. “The effect is so romantic,” says Houston architect Tom Wilson, who designed this new home. “But the reasons for it were practical.” Sun control on the first floor was also a consideration. There a large, south-facing window in the living room needed shading from the noonday sun. The architects solution was to design a master bedroom balcony that projects over the living room window below and acts as a canopy.

Nurturing gift ideas If you are taking a trip to Vail in the next week, stop by the Betty Ford Alpine Garden for some nifty home-and-garden holiday gifts.
Comfortable style transforms this backyard into an inviting family retreat. SUSANNE HUDSON DOESNT LIKE LEAVING her garden. Its easy to understand why. A finer example of blending home and garden exists only in the imagination. Marrying salvaged artifacts with a keen eye for design, she has fashioned a series of elegant, distinctive, and supremely comfortable garden rooms for which decking and grass are the floors, gravel paths are the hallways, and trees and sky are the ceilings. The Queen of Stuff Known affectionately to friends as “The Queen of Stuff,” Susanne collects all sorts of old garden paraphernalia-either treasures she chances upon or things folks drop off at her house. Artistic displays of old nozzles, sprinklers, watering cans, rakes, and clay pots abound. Regular pilgrimages to major antiques markets provide other articles. This is how the outdoor living room, the visual heart of her garden, came to be.
Home repair help People who desperately need home repairs or home-security help often are the ones who least can afford it. Thats where the city of Colorado Springs Housing Rehabilitation program comes in. The program offers loans of 3 percent or less to local home owner/occupants who qualify under low-income guidelines. The loans can be used for removing barriers for the disabled, emergency repairs, improving security for seniors, or simply doing minor repairs.

Thanks to a pharmacological breakthrough, The “polypill” will soon be with us. Combining six different heart medications in one supercharged tablet, its the latest in a line of pharmaceutical attempts to banish heart disease. What a sad indictment of our attitude to health that we could consider such mass medication as a solution for a health epidemic whose causes are clearly apparent and could be virtually eradicated through education and personal responsibility. The Western “cardiovascular crisis” could be consigned to history with a change in attitude and a willingness to implement what we already know. Why wait for the polypill when you can make a real difference to your heart health, starting today. When it comes to preventing a heart attack or stroke, little changes will cumulatively pay big dividends.
Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

From entertainment to satellite production, Californias many industries are performing brilliantly and keeping the economy in the national spotlight. The special effects involved in the production of movies is just one of the reasons for the success of the states high-tech sector. According to the California Economic Review, the Golden State is the worlds largest semiconductor producer, especially dominant in the microprocessor arena, where its companies supply nearly 90 percent of the worldwide market. A huge store of suppliers, other electronics businesses, and skilled engineers and programmers have lured many companies primarily to northern Californias famed Silicon Valley, as well as along the southern California coast. The industry is expected to grow at double-digit rates through 2002, fueled in large part by the communications equipment market, consumer electronics, and computers. Californias researchers play a significant role in the development of optical network equipment and satellites. In September Governor Gray Davis announced $6 million in matching grants to 34 Californiabased technology companies to assist in bringing innovative products to the marketplace. The grants are being made through the California Technology Investment Partnership (CalTIP), a program of the governors Trade and Commerce Agency. All grants receive matching funds from agencies such as the National Science Foundation, the Department of Commerces Advanced Technology Program, and NASA. Hughes Space and Communications Co, in El Segundo, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space Operations in Sunnyvale, and Space Systems/ Lora in Palo Alto are the top-three manufacturers in the world of traditional commercial communications satellites.
DESTINATION. The Golden State shines in the manufacturing, high-tech, and film and multimedia industries, and boasts the fifth-largest economy in the world. In October, Governor Davis touted Inc. magazines list of the countrys fastest-growing private firms, which showed that more of Americas fastest-growing companies are headquartered in California than in any other state. Of the 58 companies that dominate the list, three Golden State companies are in the top 10. The Bay Area/Silicon Valley led the list with 23 companies, and 17 Los Angeles firms and 11 San Diego firms were also named.

As I was completing my residency at Childrens National Medical Center, I, as many of my third-year colleagues, found myself wondering, where to go from here? Everything in our previous experience had been laid out in precise order, like check boxes waiting to be completed. Completing residency was the last check box on the list. We now had choices–fellowship, primary care, advocacy, etc. Enter Information Technology (IT). I can honestly say that, if I had been seriously considering a clinical job offer, I would probably be working in a clinic somewhere today. The lack of job, however, opened me to trying something new and different. When I heard about the informatics position, in which I would be able to help create a new computerized order entry system at Childrens, my hospital, I listened. and accepted the offer. Flash forward to Day One. My first day working in IT was definitely an experience to be remembered. I did not have to arrive at work until 8 am! I was able to sleep in! I actually had an office (cubicle) with my own phone and a laptop! As a resident, we had a lounge/classroom and had to vie for phone and computer usage wherever we went. In IT I had my own phone number and could give my new extension to whomever and could receive direct calls and messages.

The old man and the fishpond TRUE AT FIRST LIGHT by Ernest Hemingway Heinemann, 16.99, pp. 319 Reading Hemingway, it is often difficult to suppress the thought of Roy Campbells comment on his contemporaries. You praise the firm restraint with which they write
If we could find an economical way to control off-flavors and the blue-green algae that produce them, it would be a tremendous boon to the industry, no question, he says. Many producers would agree. Currently, a major obstacle to catfish sales is the off-flavor compounds produced by microscopic algae. These natural algae byproducts are absorbed into the fishes meat, giving them a muddy taste. The fish are still safe to eat, but they just dont taste good anymore. As a result, many are unmarketable, causing an extra $5.8 to $12 million in overhead costs. Thats why three times a week, Jeffers takes fish from harvest-ready ponds for flavor testing by processors.
heart rate monitor
July 16th, 2008
Exercise shouldnt be based on the distance traveled, the amount of time involved or the physical workload; it should be controlled by the degree of physical effort as measured by physiological signs, especially pulse rate. The best way to monitor how fast your heart is beating is a heart rate monitor, which usually consists of a strap worn across the chest that sends an electronic signal to a wristwatch-like device that converts the signal into beats per minute. These monitors enable you to adhere to an exercise program based on heart rate by giving you immediate, continuous and reliable feedback. You are thus less likely to cross the line between healthy exercise for aerobic fitness (a target heart rate of 50 to 90 percent of maximum; see chart) and risky stressful exercise. You will also know if youre not training hard enough to get the full benefits of your efforts, since your workout will be more effective if you maintain a certain pulse rate within your target heart rate zone. Training below the minimum intensity level, youll burn mostly fat and wont see much improvement in aerobic capacity. Above the 90-percent level, youll build up lactic acid; that level of training will make you more susceptible to injury if youre not a highly-conditioned athlete.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate: * Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 5%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. * Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

ATLANTA — Email marketers feel like theyre taking two steps forward and one step back when it comes to growing address lists, according to a recent JupiterResearch survey commissioned by Silverpop. Theyre making progress, but its a slow slog uphill. Concerns over list growth arent necessarily new, but its interesting that its become a top concern for email marketers, said Elaine OGorman, vice president of strategy for Silverpop. Growing a strong database of customers and prospects is obviously the core part of any strong email marketing program. All elements of sophisticated email marketing - segmentation, personalization, dynamic content, lifestyle marketing and more - depend upon the quantity and quality of the email list. Yet while marketers work diligently to add new names to the list, others drop off or become inactive. List attrition for BtoB marketers averages 2.1 percent a month, according to MarketingSherpas Email Marketing Benchmark Guide 2007. The report indicates BtoC marketers lose, on average, 2.9 percent of their email addresses each month.

Shakespeare, Einstein, and the Bottom Line: The Marketing of Higher Education, David L. Kirp, Harvard University Press, 2003, $29.95The American love affair with the idea of market competition is taking higher education into its tight embrace-and it is making a lot of people uneasy. In Shakespeare, Einstein, and the Bottom Line, David L. Kirp takes a long look at the direction of American higher education, finding that the enterprise is losing its moral high ground to the baser behaviors of market competition.
MARKETINGThe importance of marketing in the modern business climate cannot be overstated. In fact, management guru Peter F. Drucker has claimed that marketing is so basic it cannot be considered a separate function. It is the whole business seen from the point of view of its final result, that is, from the customers point of view. Marketing is the source of many important new ideas in management thought and practicesuch as flexible manufacturing systems, flat organizational structures, and an increased emphasis on serviceall of which are designed to make businesses more responsive to customer needs and preferences. This suggests that small business owners must master the basics of marketing in order to succeed. In the Macmillan Small Business Handbook, Mark Stevens discussed four main areas of marketing in which entrepreneurs should concentrate their efforts:1) determining the needs of customers through market research; 2) analyzing their own competitive advantages and developing an appropriate market strategy; 3) selecting specific target markets to serve; and 4) determining the best marketing mix to satisfy customer needs. The first three tasks are most appropriately performed when a start-up business is preparing to enter a market, or when an existing business is considering entering a new market or promoting a new product. The marketing mix, on the other hand, includes the main decision areas that an entrepreneur must consider on an ongoing basis. Some elements of the market environment, such as the general economic conditions, are beyond a small business owners control. But he or she can adjust elements of the companys marketing mixwhich consists of the four Ps: product, place, price, and promotionto better fit the market environment.
MARKETING Marketing pertains to the interactive process that requires developing, pricing, placing, and promoting goods, ideas, or services in order to facilitate exchanges between customers and sellers to satisfy the needs and wants of consumers. Thus, at the very center of the marketing process is satisfying the needs and wants of customers.

Andrew C. Cohen, DC, was recently elected president of the Hawaii Public Health Association (HPHA), marking the first time a doctor of chiropractic has been appointed to the HPHA board in any capacity in the associations 61-year history. “I see this as an opportunity to increase cooperation between the chiropractors in Hawaii and the public health community,” said Dr. Cohen in an e-mail interview. In addition to his duties with the HPHA, Dr. Cohen maintains a practice in Honolulu and serves as secretary of the Hawaii State Chiropractic Association. Dr. Cohen joins the ranks of other chiropractors involved with multidisciplinary, statewide organizations, including Karen Konarski-Hart, DC, DABCO, who was elected president of the Arkansas State Board of Health earlier this year, and Mitchell Haas, DC, who was recently appointed president of the Oregon Public Health Association.

Kipors KDE5000TA portable diesel generator boasts a maximum output of 5 kVA but is quiet due to the low-noise design of its enclosure and the addition of an intake silencer and resonator. A digital control panel displays critical operating information such as load characteristics, voltage, power (kVA), frequency, total run time and battery charge voltage. If an unexpected shutdown occurs, the front panel displays a code that reveals the nature of the fault. A convenient electric starter gets the generator up and running quickly. Despite its high output, the KDE5000TA runs for 8.5 hours on a single tank of fuel. Fill in 202 on reader service form or visit http://OneRs.hotims.com/13966-202 [ILLUSTRATION OMITTED]
Local air-quality regulators are going after operators of emergency backup generators with a proposed rule to reduce diesel emissions during routine testing and maintenance. The rule would not in any way restrict the generators from running in emergency situations when the power is out. Instead, it targets the mandatory testing and maintenance of the generators. If the generators exceed the emissions threshold allowed in their operating permits, the facility operator must take steps to reduce emissions. Atwood said the operators would have several options, including reducing the number of hours the generators are tested, installing diesel particulate traps or replacing the diesel engine inside the generator with one using cleaner-burning fuel. Were trying to chip away at this problem of cancer risk from diesel particulate emissions and this is one step among many, Atwood said.
Acne Cure
July 15th, 2008
Acne FulminansAcne fulminans is a rare skin disorder with multisystem involvement. The most severe presentation of acne, the condition most commonly occurs in white adolescent males.[1] Clinically, nodulocystic acneiform lesions develop on the face, torso and upper extremeties. The lesions are highly inflamed and tender, and eventually ulcerate. Systemic manifestations include fever, weight loss and musculoskeletal complaints. Leukocytosis, mild anemia and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) are typical laboratory findings. Since family physicians and other primary care physicians evaluate and treat more skin conditions than do dermatologists,[2,3] it is essential that this potentially catastrophic form of acne vulgaris be generally recognized and promptly treated.
What is acne? Acne happens when the inside of a hair follicle becomes sticky and forms a plug. Every strand of hair grows from a follicle under your skin. Oil glands in your skin keep making a greasy substance called sebum (say: see-bum). This sebum gets stuck behind the plug in the hair follicle. Bacteria get inside your hair follicle or oil gland and cause swelling, redness, and pus. Finally, a bump forms on your skin. Acne is most common on the face, neck, back, and arms. There are three kinds of acne: mild, moderate, and severe.

In the slow dinghy class, Strathclyde Loch Sailing Clubs Crawford Reid produced two firsts in his Albacore, putting him out in front as a clear leader in the 13-strong class and Alan Milton in Pepsi took two more decisive wins in the Sigma 33 class. Cove Sailing Clubs Alan Harper in Pied Piper sealed a championship win with a second and fourth, while Clyde Cruising Clubs Donald Sharp had two good wins and lifted the IRC Class 2 crown.

For years, Remodeling magazines annual “Cost vs. Value Report” has offered comfort to homeowners investing hefty dollars into home improvement projects. The high payback on the most popular rehabs - kitchens and bathrooms - has even been the catalyst to spur some homeowners to remodel. They felt confident that if they did good work, theyd get back most of their funds. Does this mean that homeowners should stop renovating? Hardly, especially when they have a distinct vision of how they want their home to look and function - and if they have the funds. But decreasing numbers suggest greater caution: - Never overimprove. Take the value of your existing home, add in the cost of your potential improvements and be sure the new sum doesnt exceed the value of comparable neighborhood homes.
David Fields, marketing channel manager of Hickory Hardware of Nashville, TN, was elected vice president of the Home Improvement Research Institute.
A specialty furniture manufacturer and retailer will open a showroom this fall in the Village Park Shopping Center, filling part of the vacancy left by the June 1 closure of Bollingers Books. Dallas-based Leather Center is spending about $50,000 to renovate 5,000 square feet at 10505 N. May Ave. Leasing agent Carl Archiniaco, vice president of Harrison Levy Co., said he will target other home improvement merchants to fill the shopping centers vacancies. He is already talking with a gift shop and framing gallery. “We hope to build around the home improvement theme within the shopping center,” Archiniaco said. “This is a theme that has been proven in many successful specialty shopping centers.”

PETER MULVEY Friends House Concerts, Luckett house, 7 p.m. today, $10, 329- 1644 While he strums in the intimate comfort of the Luckett house living room, where he last performed in November, the grittier aspects of Peter Mulveys artistic life come bleeding out. The singer- songwriter, with a penchant for ambitious, creative fretwork, spent time busking in Dublin, Ireland, then in daylong sessions in the subways and streets of Boston. Milwaukee-based Mulvey is a well-rounded artist who studied theater in college before beginning his successful music career.
Sondheim: Passion Original Broadway Cast (EMI Angel CDQ 7243-5-55251-2) Passion is effectively a “musical” without songs. Passion feels through-composed, though much of it is not sung or underscored. Passion is stream of consciousness, dream-like in its narrative flow. Passion is at once the most febrile and effulgently lyrical of Stephen Sondheim. All of which might just explain why it appears to have divided even the fully paid-up members of his appreciation society. Perhaps the most notable aspect of this show is the degree to which it has refined the relationship between that which is spoken and that which is sung. Passion is songful. Like the emotions it chronicles, this “rhapsody” on the power of unconditional
The MusicDar Williams discussed during her set the reasons why womyn should switch to organic, unbleached cotton tampons and other products such as sea sponges during our periods. The traces of dioxins found in grocery store tampons are hazardous carcinogens; at the same time, the male-owned “feminine hygiene product” industry is making an astounding profit off our bodies. Williams considered that the organic products are more expensive than mainstream ones, so she offered a few hilarious possibilities for overcoming the increased expense. One suggestion was to give female loved ones packages of woman-safe tampons for birthday and seasonal gifts. For her personal contribution, she stopped at every health food store and co-op on her way to the festival and cleared their shelves of boxes of unbleached tampons. At this point her traveling companions walked down the catwalk with an enormous basket full of tampons and began wildly flinging them into the audience. Gleeful womyn rushed the stage to scoop up flying tampons!Tribe 8 returned for the night stage this year. The audience was noticeably smaller than other nights because many women didnt attend the performance. I hadnt been to one of their shows before so I looked forward to seeing what all the fuss was about from previous years. Yes, Lynn Breedlove hacked off a dildo on stage in Hothead Paisan fashion. I had a visceral jolt of fascination and revulsion watching her saw at the big dildo with her huge, bright silver knife — an effect the whole show seems intended to engender. I enjoyed the show — it was energetic, joyful and participative even while it fiercely expressed their anger about being women in a patriarchal world. Many women can relate to their first song, “The Mens Room is Down the Hall.” In this song Breedlove challenges those who judge her for not conforming to patriarchal norms of how a woman should dress and act.

I used to love to go to parties. Sadly, that all changed once I became a criminal defense attorney. Below is the conversation that I have at every shindig that Ive attended over the last 10 or so years. (Invariably dollar signs flash in my new acquaintances eyes despite the fact that Im clearly wearing a suit unfit for a rack in a fancy law firm.)

THE GOVERNMENTS youth crime tsar has called for the scrapping of defence lawyers for child offenders amid fears that coaching by solicitors is leading young people to become career criminals. Lord Warner, the chairman of the Youth Justice Board, said lawyers were treating offenders as young as 10 as if they were adult clients, advising them to plead not guilty despite evidence to the contrary, and coaching them not to comment in interviews. Yesterday, David Blunkett admitted there was an “almost exponential” increase in 11 to 15-year-olds getting involved in street robbery and mobile telephone thefts.

WASHINGTON — The housing market is still booming, with construction of new homes rising 0.2 percent in May. Builders rushed to break ground on new projects to meet strong demand fueled by low mortgage rates. While the May increase was slightly below the 0.6 percent gain that had been forecast, economists blamed a decline in the South on the temporary effect of unusually wet weather in Florida and other parts of the South. They noted that permits for new construction, a key indicator of future strength, came in at a solid annual rate of 2.050 million units. “We still have a red-hot housing market,” said David Seiders, chief economist of the National Association of Home Builders. “Surveys of both lenders and builders are showing tremendous ongoing strength with little or no hints that anything is starting to fall.”

Monday May 5, 2003 will go down in history as a day to remember in employment law. It was the day the long-debated amendments to the Health Safety in Employment Act finally came into effect. Why is this new legislation so important? The term “workplace stress” took on a whole new significance, with new obligations for employers, and potentially serious financial consequences for those who ignore them. Workplace stress is no longer simply a sad fact of life. It is now an officially recognised and legislated “workplace hazard”, with the amendments extending the definitions of “harm” and “hazard” to include physical and mental harm caused by work-related stress. A cursory reading of the new legislation might be enough to instantly treble employers workplace stress, but a deeper understanding goes some way to restoring mental equilibrium. The Occupational Safety and Health booklet, Healthy work, Managing Stress in the Workplace, tells employers that “there is only a requirement to manage work stressors or the individuals stressed situation where you can be reasonably expected to know about the stress. Even then the obligation is only to do what is reasonably practicable in the circumstances.”

In 2006, following Hurricane Katrina, getting the right kind of coverages at an affordable price in the sports entertainment realm was very difficult. Reassessing business income was high on the priority list. That put the onus on brokers to make sure their clients were not suffering the same fate as buyers of property-catastrophe coverage. Brokers deserve credit for securing the near-term future of big-time sports and entertainment events by making sure they all had a roof over their heads.

Real estate is a popular investment among Canadians. There are several advantages to investing in real estate. Real estate is leveraged. You may pay only a fraction (as low as 10%) of what the property is worth when you buy it. Real estate has utility. If you buy stocks or bonds, you cannot do anything with them; but when you buy real estate, you can use it until you sell it. For example, you can live in a house.

Through simulated and actual banking-school programs, Black children are learning to open savings accounts, participate in investment clubs, and complete deposit and withdrawal slips, says a finance article featured in the April issue of Ebony Magazine. Our children dont care about buying $150 sneakers because they dont know the value of $150, said Cassandra Mills, president of the Black Music division of Giant Records. If they did, they might not want to spend the whole sum on shoes.

GREAT food, cheap wine and an unspoilt landscape make France the most popular destination with Britons for short breaks and longer holidays. JACQUI THAKE takes a trip through the countryside of Limousin. AS we planned the morning hike across the countryside of Limousin our French hostess urged us: “Make sure you wear your baskets.” Confusion turned to hilarity when we realised that baskets in French meant trainers. Anyway, suitably booted for our expedition round the magnificent Lac du Causse in the Couze Valley, we set off in high spirits as the sun had come out at last.

As Gemstar-TV Guide International Inc. re-launches a bigger version of its television programming guide, the company faces rising legal costs associated with a Securities and Exchange Commission inquiry of its former officers. Several former officers, including founder Henry Yuen, are under investigation by the SEC for inflating licensing revenues. The trial has been put on hold as both sides battle over whether their severance payments may be frozen. For the April-June period, Gemstar reduced legal expenses by $5.8 million to $600,000. But the company also filed a complaint last month against its former insurance carriers alleging they have failed to pay claims filed under its policies.
Consider adding a legal service plan to your employee perks A recent study found that three lawsuits are filed every second in the United States. That means most people are more likely to be involved in some sort of legal action over the next year than to be hospitalized. And, many of those people will be your credit unions employees. Employers struggling with a tight job market are learning that providing legal services as a benefit is a low-cost, low-hassle incentive for prospective and current employees. The plans cost $10-$16 per month for full family coverage and rarely increase in cost no matter how many employees use the services.

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY: The Internet presents both opportunities and challenges for marketers of healthcare products. An advocate for the medium argues for its increasing value in a comprehensive media mix, offers advice on how to make programs more productive, and cautions on Internet pitfalls. A similar, dramatic increase is occurring in Internet advertising. For all industries, including pharmaceuticals, total 1997 online revenues reached $1 billion. The Internet Advertising Bureau projects this figure rising to $2 billion in 1998, $5 billion in the year 2000, and $9 billion by 2002.
At the beginning of this century, a new advertising industry came of age in the United States. Now, at the turn of the twenty-first century, new global media and audiences are reshaping this industry and the advertising we see. The next frontier is worldwide, and the new media are as open-ended as cyberspace. The tremendous growth of the Internet as an advertising medium has been widely documented in a variety of published articles and reports. Although advertisers still invest more than 45 percent of their media budget in newspaper and television, the Internet Advertising Bureau (IAB) estimates that more than $900 million was spent on Internet advertising in 1997 and projects that the end-of-year figures for 1998 will show an expenditure of at least $2 billion. Business Week predicts that ad spending on the Internet will be close to $8 billion by 2002.1 One important reason why revenue is increasing at such a rapid rate is that many ol the more established and popular Web sites are charging more for their ads. In general, advertisers pay for their ads on a “cost per thousand” (CPM) basis, i.e., advertisers pay a fee for every thousand times their ad is viewed. CPM rates for television range from $5 to $6 per thousand. Compare this tc Web site charges: the average cost for banner ads is $17, but more popular sites can charge a premium of $20 to $22 per thousand for access to their visitors. Advertisers pay more for Internet ads because these sites can deliver a more targeted audience.

Rarely a day goes by where you do not see, hear, or read about a car accident. Some car accidents are minor fender benders in which no one gets hurt while others are tragic multiple vehicle accidents resulting in injury and death. Our legal system is built on the belief that those injured by the carelessness of others have a fundamental right to be fully compensated for their injuries. Car accidents can result in injury to both persons and property. Car insurance serves two purposes. Your car insurance protects you when you are at fault for an accident. The other persons car insurance protects you when you are the victim of a car accident.

Now there is an agency in Patterson able to provide private insurance.”

“Weve seen phenomenal growth both in the adoption of technology by traditional real estate firms and in the formation of real estate focused dot coms,” says Dale Anne Reiss, global leader of the real estate arm of Ernst Young. “Literally hundreds of firms (are) now operating and more (are) arriving every day.” These thoughts were echoed by Joe Rubin, National Director of Real Estate eBusiness Solutions. “Traditional real estate companies are finally embracing technology because they see that the Internet has now delivered the tools for online service providers to deliver business processes faster, cheaper and more efficiently.” According to Reiss, start-up activity has been particularly intense in the capital and transactions sectors.” While the transaction sector is in its relative infancy, more than two dozen sites have quickly emerged through which commercial real estate properties can be acquired and sold online,” says Reiss. “And there are more that 30 sites where commercial properties can be leased or marketed online. The digital economy is changing so quickly that companies. need to be able to think on their feet, and reap opportunity whenever and wherever it comes.”

Through a newly formed subsidiary, INBRAND Europe, the Company has made a successful bid to purchase certain assets of Celatose, S.A., a French-based manufacturer of adult incontinence products and baby diapers. Celatose has been operating under the protection of the French bankruptcy act, and the Companys bid was accepted by the French court. Terms of the Companys offer were not disclosed. In a related development, INBRAND has signed an agreement in principle to acquire Julian T. Holding B.V., a marketing organization based in the Netherlands. Completion of a definitive purchase agreement is subject to certain conditions, including the satisfactory due diligence by INBRAND relating to the transaction. Terms of the agreement include a contract with the principals of Julian T. Holding B.V. covering management of INBRAND Europe as well as a minority ownership in that subsidiary. INBRAND will have an option to purchase that minority interest based on the future profitability of INBRAND Europe. These transactions represent an exceptional opportunity to build on our current European base, remarked Garnett A. Smith, chairman and chief executive officer of INBRAND. Although Celatose had recent financial difficulties, we are confident that the underlying facilities and organization can be operated profitably. With our bid, we submitted a comprehensive restructuring plan which we believe will serve as an effective blueprint for the management of these assets. Celatose had a leading market position in the manufacturing of adult incontinence products and disposable baby diapers. Our plan is to capitalize on that standing. Julian T. Holding B.V., which is a well-established marketer of these products in the Benelux countries through its Vital Disposables subsidiary, is expected to be an important catalyst in executing our strategy. Our plans include organizing the European operations which we are acquiring as INBRAND Europe, and we are pleased that Jan van Grinsven, founder of Julian T. Holding B.V., will be the managing director of this new operating unit.

Winning legal aid is now harder than ever. The Governments pounds 2bn legal aid budget is fixed and is split between both criminal and civil cases. Criminal cases, where defendants have a right to legal representation, take the lions share of the cash. No win, no fee: Reducing spending on legal aid for civil cases is a Government priority ” it wants to direct people towards mediation services rather than court action. Moves to extend the type of case where lawyers can offer a no-win, no-fee service are also intended to reduce the need for legal aid. Check eligibility: The easiest way to check eligibility for legal aid is to consult the Community Legal Service. Its members, including Citizens Advice, can explain how the means tests work ” and whether your case is potentially eligible for assistance.

According to Christopher L. Morin, the Companys President and Chief Operating Officer, the sale of NCE results from a determination by Noble to exit the heavy equipment business in view of, among other things, the capital requirements to undertake acquisitions to grow the business, the volatility of earnings inherent in the business, the weakness in the current market, and the attractive sale price from Quantum. At this point we will continue to concentrate on our existing opportunities, as well as undertaking additional research and development of laser welding of thick metal plates. In addition, over the course of the next three years our Noble Metal Processing Division will be launching in excess of 22 parts on 12 new platforms which will require the financial and managerial resources of the Company. These programs will result in excess of $930 million in life-cycle revenue, which includes approximately $300 million of value-added revenue. We are extremely pleased that these new launches encompass production parts for Ford, GM, DCX, Saturn, BMW, Honda and Nissan. Quantum is a private equity fund seeking long-term capital growth through investments in small and middle market companies. According to Kenneth A.
